Individualized Assessment in a Web-based Algebra Tutor

Personalization is a very crucial matter in Web-based educational systems, since these systems aim at reaching a large and heterogeneous group of learners in settings where no teacher may be available. The personalization needed in distance learning may be achieved by the integration of Intelligent Tutoring Systems with Web-based education. In this paper we describe an adaptive Web-based Algebra Tutor, which is called Web-EasyMath. The system aims at teaching the domain of algebraic powers. In order to be able to provide individualized instruction, Web-EasyMath constructs and updates a model of each student. Then, based on the model of the student, the system presents individualized tests for the student to solve.
